Data Privacy, Security and Backup. Why it Matters

  1. 45% of Americans have had their personal information compromised by a data breach in the last five years.

  2. 60% of all people who go online report they have faced at least one data breach at some point in time.

  3. 60% of all people who go online report they have faced at least one data breach in the last year.

  4. Nearly two-thirds of Americans (64%) have experienced at least one of seven types of data theft measured in a survey.

  5. 41% of Americans have learned they were victims of a data breach by seeing fraudulent charges on their credit or debit cards.

  6. Around one-third (35%) of Americans have received notices that some sort of sensitive personal information had been compromised.

  7. 15% of Americans have received notices that their social security number had potentially fallen into the wrong hands.

While the exact percentages vary slightly between sources, it's clear that a significant portion of Americans - likely between 45-64% - have been affected by some form of data breach or loss in recent years. The problem appears to be widespread, with many Americans experiencing multiple types of data breaches or theft so you should educate yourself and only trust your data to companies that put privacy and security first.
